Mechanical Engineer - Water & Wastewater
Australia

Mechanical Design | Water Infrastructure | Staff Equity | $105k-$150k + super

Cairns preferred | Sunshine Coast | Melbourne | Brisbane | Sydney | Gold Coast

Mechanical engineering in water is at its best when the design works on paper, in construction and once operators take control.

This opportunity gives you that full-project perspective, with meaningful input into the pumps, pipework and equipment that keep essential infrastructure working.

Cairns is the immediate priority, with genuine opportunities also available across five other Australian locations.

We're partnering with our client, an established Australian engineering consultancy specialising in water and wastewater infrastructure. Their multidisciplinary teams deliver engineering and design for treatment plants, pump stations, pipelines, reservoirs and related assets.

They are seeking an independently productive Mechanical Engineer who can own mechanical design packages while working closely with process, civil, structural and drafting colleagues.

This is not a generic building-services mechanical role. It is for someone who enjoys solving practical plant problems, coordinating interfaces and producing designs that can be built, commissioned, operated and maintained.

The Opportunity

You will contribute to water and wastewater projects from concept and tender design through detailed design, construction support and commissioning.

The role will see you involved across:

• Mechanical design for water and wastewater treatment plants, pump stations and associated infrastructure

• Selection and specification of pumps, valves, pipework and process-mechanical equipment

• Design calculations, equipment schedules, technical specifications, reports and design documentation

• Coordination of mechanical requirements with process, hydraulic, civil, structural and electrical disciplines

• Design reviews, constructability input and resolution of technical issues across project delivery

• Technical support during tendering, construction, commissioning and handover where required

You'll have room to apply sound engineering judgement, contribute ideas and see how your decisions perform beyond the design office.

What We're Looking For

We're interested in speaking with mechanical engineers who can work with autonomy while contributing to a close multidisciplinary team.

You'll likely bring:

• Approximately 5 to 12 years of relevant engineering experience

• Experience in water, wastewater, industrial, mining or another process-infrastructure environment

• Practical knowledge of pumps, piping systems, valves and mechanical equipment

• The ability to produce clear calculations, specifications, reports and design deliverables

• Strong communication and coordination skills across technical and project stakeholders

Technical Experience

Experience across some or all of the following will be highly regarded:

• Water and wastewater treatment plants, pump stations, pipelines and reservoirs

• Hydraulic design and process-mechanical interfaces

• AutoCAD Plant 3D, Navisworks or comparable design platforms

• Construction support, commissioning support, operations manuals or operator training

Qualifications

• A relevant tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering

• CPEng, RPEQ or equivalent professional registration is highly regarded, but not essential

Why This Role Stands Out

Our client is building careers for the long term, not hiring people for one isolated project.

You can expect:

• A specialist water and wastewater environment with multidisciplinary technical depth

• Exposure to essential infrastructure projects across Australia, including remote communities

• A choice of established office locations, with Cairns the current priority

• A friendly, down-to-earth working environment where strong performance is recognised

• A genuine opportunity to participate in staff share and equity ownership

• A base salary of $105k-$150k plus super, with scope above this range for exceptional specialist capability

If you want to deepen your technical identity in water while building a genuine stake in the business you are helping grow, this could be worth a confidential discussion.
